Forward head posture occurs when the head gradually shifts in front of the shoulders instead of resting directly over them. While this position may seem minor, every inch the head moves forward significantly increases the workload placed on the muscles, joints, and connective tissues of the neck and upper back.
Over time, this can contribute to chronic muscle tension, headaches, neck pain, shoulder discomfort, restricted movement, and even numbness or tingling into the arms and hands.
Your head weighs approximately 10–12 pounds when it is properly aligned over your shoulders.
As the head moves forward:
Small improvements in posture can significantly reduce stress on these tissues and improve overall movement.
